How to Install a Smart Lock on Your Front Door
By James Evans · Best Bay Services
Smart locks let you unlock your door with a code, your phone, or your voice — no fumbling for keys. Most smart locks are designed as direct replacements for standard deadbolts and install in 15–30 minutes with just a screwdriver. If you can swap a door handle, you can install a smart lock.
What Kind of Smart Lock Should I Choose?
Smart locks come in three main styles:
- Full deadbolt replacement — replaces both the interior and exterior hardware (Schlage Encode, Kwikset Halo). These look clean and offer the most features but require removing your existing deadbolt completely
- Retrofit (interior only) — mounts on the inside of your existing deadbolt, keeping the exterior hardware unchanged (August, Yale Approach). Great for rentals and homeowners who like their existing exterior hardware
- Keypad add-on — replaces the exterior side with a keypad while keeping a modified interior thumbturn (Schlage BE365). Simple and reliable, no smart home integration required
For most Valrico homeowners, a full deadbolt replacement with keypad and Wi-Fi (like the Schlage Encode Plus) offers the best combination of convenience and security. You get a keypad for codes, app access for remote locking, and a physical key backup.
How Do I Install a Smart Lock?
- Remove the existing deadbolt — unscrew the interior thumbturn plate, pull the exterior cylinder out, and unscrew the latch from the edge of the door
- Install the new latch — insert the new latch bolt into the edge of the door (make sure the angled face points toward the door frame when closed)
- Install the exterior assembly — slide it through the bore hole from the outside, routing any cable through the latch hole
- Install the interior assembly — align the mounting plate, connect any cable, and secure with the provided screws. Do not over-tighten — particleboard doors can crack
- Install batteries — most smart locks use 4 AA batteries; some use a rechargeable pack
- Test the lock manually — lock and unlock several times to make sure the bolt extends fully and retracts smoothly
- Program the lock — follow the manufacturer's instructions to set your master code, add user codes, and connect to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth
- Test the strike alignment — close the door and lock it from both sides. If the bolt does not engage smoothly, adjust the strike plate on the frame
What Problems Come Up During Installation?
The most common issue is alignment. Smart lock bolts are less forgiving than manual deadbolts — they need to slide into the strike plate smoothly because the motor cannot push through friction the way your thumb can. If the bolt drags or sticks:
- Check that the latch bolt is oriented correctly (angled face toward the frame)
- Adjust the strike plate position — loosen screws, shift slightly, re-tighten
- File the strike plate opening if the bolt barely misses
- Make sure the door is not warped or swollen from humidity — a common issue in Florida
Should I Set Up Smart Home Integration?
If you have a smart home hub (Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa), connecting your smart lock lets you lock and unlock with voice commands, set up automations (auto-lock at bedtime), and get notifications when the door is unlocked. This is where smart locks go from convenient to genuinely useful — especially if you want to give temporary access codes to house guests, pet sitters, or service providers.
Our smart home installation service includes lock installation, Wi-Fi setup, app configuration, and integration with your existing smart home ecosystem.
When Should I Hire a Pro?
Hire a pro if:
- Your door does not have a standard deadbolt bore (non-standard size or position)
- The door is warped, swollen, or does not close properly — the door needs fixing before the lock goes on
- You want multiple locks installed and integrated together
- You are not comfortable with the alignment and troubleshooting process
